Breaking news! We just heard from @RogersMary that Rogers has decided to offer owners of the Rogers HTC Dream a “limited time” opportunity to exchange their HTC Dreams for HTC Magics, thus ensuring they get the update to 2.1. This may not be the best news for people who really like having a physical keyboard, but it’s better than nothing.
She has also posted this information in the forum.
Details have yet to be worked out by Rogers, and nothing is available yet. @RogersMary will have more when she can. Here is her message:
Rogers Statement re: HTC Dream
—————————————————-
“It’s great to hear that everyone is pleased by HTC’s agreement to upgrade Magic to 2.1. We pushed hard on your behalf and are pleased with that part. When it comes to Dream, we share in your frustration that the device does not have the required on-board memory for an upgrade. We’ve reviewed this internally and believe that Dream users should be able to have the same HTC Android experience as those who purchased the Magic. So, we are offering our HTC Dream customers a limited time opportunity to upgrade from their current HTC Dream device to the HTC Magic.
We’re working on finalizing the details of that promotion now but wanted to let you know the great news as soon as possible. Please be patient as this is not yet available in-store, online or through customer care. I will be back next week to provide you with more information.
Stay tuned!
@RogersMary”
If you’re interested, I can send you the details of the upgrade once I have them available to share. Just let me know.
Have a great weekend!
Mary
Wow this is great news for both customers and Android!
I’ll be heading straight to Rogers as soon as the promotion is available in store.
This is good corporate responsibility on the part of Rogers Wireless. We had to push hard and basically teach Rogers about what they had, but when they were up to speed they sure went to bat for us. Let’s hope that other companies can learn from this, IE: LG with the EVE and Bell / Samsung with the Galaxy.
I cannot thank you enough for your hard work on this! Please keep posting and keep pushing since you are obviously getting results
I got the dream for Christmas but I will certainly trade it in for the magic if that’s what it takes to get a phone that will at least get the bare minimum of updates. Can’t wait to read about the how’s and when’s so I can get rid of the clunker.
Mike, thanks so much for your efforts to bring this to the attention of the public and Roger’s. While I will miss my physical keyboard, I would certainly miss the update more! Thanks also to @RogersMary for pushing things on behalf of her customers. Looking forward to hear about the exchange program.
Does this mean they are going to stop selling the Dream?
I gave up. Now that it is perfectly apparent the Dream is dead in the water I checked and was fortunate enough to see that I could return the phone outright. Being within the 15 days and, fortunately, under 30 minutes of airtime used I am mailing the Dream back tomorrow in exchange for the Magic. I hope that the system Rogers will put in place for the mass exchange will be less painful than the phone conversation I went through today.
No one knew how to return a phone and I got bounced around to several people before one agreed to take the information. Tomorrow I still have to call them back and tell them, again, that I am mailing the phone to them (I received it through mail as well so I already had the return label). On top of this, my complaint through your handy link on the right has also gone unacknowledged despite it having been sent 3 days ago.
